Description

“A CLASSIC ABANDONMENT was near my house. The convenience allowed me to photograph it in all seasons. I was trying to solve a technical problem more than trying to make art. With film, there was a limitation on how large a photograph can be enlarged. The idea of assembling multiple images was at the root of the motivation. Also, creating different planes for each frame gives it a sculptured effect, I coined Topographic. I did not have a darkroom enlarger to handle an 8×10 negative, these thirty-plus-year-old photographs never came to life. They are ideally suited for today’s technology.”—John Chao
